Apple IIc ROM 4X Upgrade Kit

This kit is used to upgrade an Apple IIc (ROM versions 255, 0, 3) to version 4X. The "kit" consists of the ROM 4 chip andand a 17-page full-color illustrated installation and use manual on USB thumbdrive.[Although the photos show a CD, we are now shipping with the manual on USB thumbdrive as many modern PCs no longer have CD/DVD drives. If you wish to receive the manual on CD instead of thumbdrive, please let us know at the time of ordering.]
Please note that soldering skills are required because there is a small bit of soldering to be done on the motherboard. Providing the manual on CD allows you to magnify the 8 high-def photos as much as you desire to see details! Please also note that there are a few motherboards which will not accept the upgraded chip. We do not know of any way to determine this in advance; the only way to know is to perform the upgrade and if the system does not work, revert back to your original chip.

ROM 4X is a non-official-Apple version created by mgcaret& offers several improvements/changes over the earlier ROM4 version. From mgcaret's github page:

ROM 4X adds the following features to the Apple //c firmware:

• Identifies and reinstates abootable(it must have something that looks like a boot block!) RAM disk from battery-backed expansion memory.
• Provides a menu of various tools upon pressing Ctrl+Closed-Apple+Reset (or holding Closed-Apple when powering up), that let you:
  • Enter the monitor unconditionally.
  • Reboot the machine (enter standard boot sequence).
  • Zero the RAM card, in case it is corrupted.
  • Execute the machine and RAM card diagnostics.
  • Tell the machine to boot the SmartPort, the internal floppy drive, or an external floppy drive.
  • The system drops to BASIC if no bootable device is found (this is the default behavior in the IIc Plus).
  • Configure default boot device by saving a file on the RAM Disk.

    If you are able to do soldering work, then you will find this process quite easy. Basically, there are two (2) solder joins on the motherboard that need to be addressed, and you swap one chip out & replace it with the included chip. That's all there is to it!
    
    We personally QA test each chip to ensure it works BEFORE packaging.
