Atari BASIC is an interpreter for the BASIC programming language built by Shepardson Microsystems for the Atari 8-bit family of home computers. It debuted in 1979 as an 8 KB ROM cartridge and later came built directly into the hardware of systems like the Atari 6502-based 800XL and 65XE.Unlike standard Microsoft BASIC dialects of the era, Atari BASIC was specifically tailored to exploit the advanced television interface adapters (ANTIC and GTIA) and sound chips (POKEY) unique to Atari hardware.Key Technical CharacteristicsIntegrated Graphics & Sound: It featured built-in commands like GRAPHICS, PLOT, DRAWTO, and SOUND. This allowed users to program color graphics and multi-channel audio without complex machine-language POKE commands.Syntax Checking on Entry: The interpreter checked code for syntax errors the moment a line was typed and entered. If an error was found, it immediately flagged it, rather than waiting until the program was executed.String Handling via Arrays: It lacked support for string arrays. Instead, it treated all strings as large single-dimension character arrays. Users had to explicitly size strings using the DIM command (e.g., DIM A$(20)) before use.Tokenized Code Storage: Code was not saved as plain ASCII text. It was tokenized into an optimized, space-saving binary format during entry to fit inside the tight memory limits of early computers like the Atari 400 and 800.
