The DB9 Serial Null Modem Cable is a specialized RS-232 serial cable with cross-wired pins. It connects two Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) devices—like two computers or a PC to a server/router—directly, allowing them to communicate without a modem. Originally purchased from Campbell Scientific, for connecting cellular modems to Data Loggers. How It Works
Standard (Straight-through) Cable: Pin 2 connects to Pin 2, causing the transmit (Tx) line of one device to connect to the Tx of the other (meaning both talk simultaneously, and no data is received).
Null Modem Cable: Internally crosses the Tx (Transmit) and Rx (Receive) lines. The Tx of the first connector links to the Rx of the second connector, and vice versa. This cross-linked setup acts as a crossover cable, allowing two devices to both talk and listen to each other.
Common Uses
Networking Equipment: Used for configuring routers, switches, and firewalls by connecting a PC's serial port to the device's console port.
Legacy Peripherals: Connecting older equipment like serial printers or scientific instruments directly to a computer.
File Transfers: Allowing older computers to exchange files directly via terminal software.
Hardware Debugging: Plugging microcontrollers and development boards directly into a PC for programming and debugging.
