This is a loved and cared for Compaq Portable III that I have gotten back to working and functional condition.
The motherboard has been fully recapped, replacing all tantalum capacitors with electrolytic's of equivalent capacitance. The tantalums get replaced as they tend to fail due to their age.
The system CMOS battery has been replaced with a homemade 4V battery to keep bios settings from resetting on power down. This can be easily replaced with an aftermarket product in the future when it eventually fails.
The original hard drive was replaced with one from about the same era that still works, a 42MB Conner CP3000. This drive has been formatted and has Compaq MS-DOS 3.31 installed.
Another replacement was the keyboard cable, with one that is not cracking or showing signs of wear.
Here are some other specs on this system:
- 80286 Processor @ 8/12 Mhz
- 640KB Ram, able to expanded with aftermarket expansion card
- 1.2 MB 5.25" Floppy disk drive, clean and fully tested for reliability
- External CGA Display Port
- Serial and Parallel Ports
Externally this system is in very good condition. I have had to add a few pieces of plastic epoxy to help certain areas from forming cracks; please see the photos of those attached. Other spots have general wear and tear from a system that is almost 40 years old. Again, please look over the attached photos carefully and if other shots are needed, please reach out and I can provide them.
Included in this sale is a nice padded carrying case for the system as well. It does have a few spots of wear, but no gaping tears or exposed padding.
I will also include 2 copies of system disks; one of the Compaq MS-DOS 3.31 and the other of the Compaq Diagnostics to allow for the system bios settings to be set.
Please feel free to reach out with any questions regarding this system. Thanks!
