This is a DELL INSPIRON 14Z-5423 laptop (DellInspiron-14z-5423 14" i5-3317U 1.7GHz 8GB 256gb Teamgroup SSD drive + 1tbSDXC cardthat has been cleaned, refurbished as needed and upgraded to anice full-featured **DUAL-BOOT** Linux Zorin 18 Education (latest version) ANDLinux Mint Cinnamon 22.3 (latest version) machine ready for use as a greatlightweight Internet browsing, e-mail, and general-purpose laptop. Buyershave been asking for dual-boot setups so here’s one that works well! Asthis is an older (circa 2014) but quite capable model, Linux runs extremelywell on this laptop. Zorin 18 and Mint 22 both run on the popular UbuntuLinux platform and is about as Windows-like as they come and the learning curveis therefore very short for newcomers to Linux. Easy to use and easy tolearn -- great for anyone just wanting to learn about using Linux and/or transitioningfrom Windows. This is the perfect opportunity to become familiar with oneof the most popular and easy-to-use Linux distributions available and thelearning curve is minimal because they are very Windows-like infunctionality.WithZorin 18 Education (latest version)thismachine ready for use as a great Internet browsing, e-mail, and general-purposelaptop with a nice 14-inch screen. This is an "older" (circa2014) model, but runs Zorin 18 AND Mint 22.3 flawlesslyand it’s verysnappy! This is your chance to get a low-cost but capable Linux laptop ata fraction of the cost of a newer expensive Windows11 laptop. Zorin 18 is a premier version of Linux thatis very feature-rich, easy to learn and use, and is one of the best Linuxdistributions for those switching from Windows to Linux. **Zorin 18 also makes it easy to install andrun many Windows software apps!** The Zorin 18 Education version isfree, has most of the features of Zorin 18 Pro, and if desired it can beupgraded to Zorin 18 Pro (a $40 license).Basically, Zorin Pro has a few more features desired by some, and hasincluded live support – please visit the Zorin website for all details. Zorin comes with Libre Office installed whichis a worthy alternative to Microsoft Office and can work with all MicrosoftOffice files if desired.Of course, Linux is a free open-sourceplatform devoid of many Windows issues and apps are free and easily installedvia each operating system’s software managers. The full-featured Zorin 18is totally free and has plenty of productivity, music, multimedia apps andgames and both have basic full-featured apps already installed including acomplete LibreOffice suite, and Zorin (and Mint) are well-supported on theirwebsites as well as user forums. There are hundreds of free apps that areeasy to install and both Zorin and Mint make updating and upgrading easy as newversions (all free) come out. This is the perfect opportunity to learn to use aLinux-based machine with all the advantages, or if you’re already familiar withLinux, just to have a handy extra laptop (or backup laptop) just for e-mailingand web browsing! Please read and see that this is a lot of laptop valuefor the price and what's included!

**Zorin 18 and Mint 22 both being Ubuntu-based have manysimilar features and each has some unique features, but are quite differentdesktops – these two are constantly compared and often it boils down to personalpreferences. The dual boot is basicallyset up to equally share a 256gb SSD drive so each OS is approximately 125gb withplenty of sufficient drive space for each OS for any casual user. It’s like having two laptops in one! The 1tb SDXC storage card shares files thatcan be accessed by either Zorin or Mint so that’s a tremendous advantage. When the laptop boots, the user is presentedwith a menu to choose the OS – it’s as simple as that! Otherwise each OS is oblivious to each other –only the 1tb SDXC card is shared by both operating systems.** 125gb in Linux OS goes a long way vs. 125gbin a Win11 OS!

It includes thelaptop, a Dell 65W power adapter, laptop manuals files on the desktop, a *NEW*battery, a *NEW* CMOS battery, a 1TB SD storage card, some basic installedprograms that I recommend, and more! Please read and see that this is alot of laptop value for the price and what's included! (**also note that the price of SATA drives has nearly *TRIPLED* in the past 6 months!**)

**I've resigned to the fact that selling this one will bea net loss for me with the parts put into it (particularly a replacementmotherboard) but it was fun restoring it to full functionality and keeping itout of an e-waste landfill! ;) ** That happens once in a while so my losswill certainly be your gain!

This machine is reasonably clean with minimal wear and scratches and fullyfunctional. I take pride in repurposing these older machines that stillhave plenty of life in them when not pushed beyond their reasonablelimits. It includes a **NEW** battery in perfect working condition, a newCMOS battery which should last for about 10 years, a genuine Dell 65-watt ACpower adapter (the same or similar one in the pics), a set of battery break-ininstructions (new batteries need “conditioned” for maximum longevity), and I’vedownloaded the Inspiron 14Z-5423 getting-service manuals onto the Zorin ANDMint desktops for you! – how’s that for customer care? Known cosmeticdefects: some minor scratches/scuffs on outer case, some normal wear onthe keyboard and touchpad which does not detract from overall picturequality. Pre-OS diagnostics have been run on this laptop (which areindependent of the operating system) and no issues were found.

**I have replaced the laptop battery and CMOS battery** (I haverepaired/refurbished many of these Inspiron 14z-5423 laptops).

***Note: As this laptop battery is new, for optimallife and performance it should be "conditioned" by discharging itdown to 10% or so then recharging fully, then repeat that process 2-3 times.

This machine has been completely gone over and everything functions asshould.

All drivers are installed properly (see pic) and this laptop works flawlesslywith Zorin 18

I have downloaded all the 14z-5423 manuals and placed them on the desktop foryour convenience.

I have upgraded the DDR3 memory to 8gb (2 x 4gb max for this machine)

I have added a *NEW* removable 1tb SDXC card for storage purposes. Thislaptop DOES NOT have the additional 32gb mSATA drive included with some14Z-5423 models.

This laptop has Bluetooth 4.0, Wifi, a built-in camera and microphone array, and an 8X DVD±R/RW drive.

**KNOWN COSMETIC-ONLY FLAWS FOR THIS LISTING** (please see pics):Missing door that covers USB, HDMI, and RJ45 ports (but does not affectfunctionality in any way and is usually considered to be a nuisance). Also there may be some minor scratches/scuffs on outer case, some normal wearon the keyboard and touchpad.

This listing has the 14" glossy (not matte) screen that is excellentcondition and has the standard Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics.

This listing DOES NOT have the additional discrete RadeonHD 7570M graphics.

This machine is otherwise VERY clean with minimal wear and scratches and fullyfunctional. I take pride in repurposing these older machines that stillhave plenty of life in them when not pushed beyond their reasonablelimits. This machine is very snappy for an Intel Core i5 processor sodon't let that fool you into thinking it is very underpowered.

I sell these machines as projects to repurpose them and onlymake a little profit to cover the replacement parts and time spent to reducee-waste and tossing these otherwise very capable machines into landfills. If not using a Bluetooth mouse I suggest buying a wireless USB mouse witha dongle for this laptop - which works flawlessly with this laptop and as aplug-n-play device. Note that although this laptop has Bluetooth, not allBluetooth devices may work well with it - however, using an inexpensive Bluetoothmouse will free up your USB ports.
