Differences Between 9800XL and 9800XL Plus
The "Plus" model replaced the original base ScanMaker 9800XL (which debuted back in 2002) by integrating several physical and operational upgrades:
9800XL
Light Source (LED vs. Cold Cathode): The original 9800XL used a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) that required a warm-up period. The Plus model features a Tri-wavelength LED lamp, which provides instant-on, warm-up-free scanning and lowers power consumption.
Connectivity (USB 2.0 vs. Multiple Interfaces): The legacy 9800XL was built during a transitional tech era and featured FireWire, SCSI-II, and early USB interfaces. The Plus version stripped out the outdated SCSI and FireWire ports to rely entirely on a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port alongside networking capabilities.
Software Optimization
The Plus variant was retooled natively for modernized document control apps, shifting focus to SilverFast 8 and Microtek's newer ScanPotter (for Mac) and ScanWizard Pro (for Windows) engines.
The core optical imaging system remained mostly identical, preserving the same 1600 x 3200 dpi resolution, CCD sensor array, and 3.7 Dmax dynamic range.
